The Daily Examen

A simple evening review of gratitude, honesty, mercy, and tomorrow's grace.

4 min Practice

Begin with the prayer

The Examen is a gentle review of the day with God. It is not anxious self-analysis. It is gratitude, truth, mercy, and help for tomorrow.

It is especially useful for people who want prayer to become more honest and practical.

A prayer journal, candle, and small stars for reviewing the day with God.

Prayer text

Holy Spirit, help me see this day with honesty and peace.

Thank you for the graces I received. Forgive me where I failed to love. Show me one grace I need for tomorrow. Amen.

After each failure, ask forgiveness, pick yourself up, and try again.
C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

How to pray with this guide

  • What does this prayer teach? The Examen is a gentle review of the day with God: gratitude, truth, mercy, and tomorrow’s help.
  • How can I pray it? Ask the Holy Spirit to show the day without panic or self-excuse.
  • What can I try this week? Each night name one grace, one failure, one person to pray for, and one grace needed tomorrow.

Why Catholics pray Daily Examen

It teaches a person to review life with God instead of with panic, denial, or self-hatred. The day becomes a place to notice grace and ask mercy.

The five movements

Ask for light. Give thanks. Review the day. Ask forgiveness. Look toward tomorrow. You can do this in five minutes, especially if you stay concrete.

What to look for

Notice where you were alive, grateful, loving, resentful, fearful, impatient, tempted, or helped. Patterns matter. Over time, the Examen teaches discernment.

How it connects to confession

The Examen can prepare the heart for confession without becoming harsh. It helps name real sins and real graces in the presence of mercy.

Open the Scripture

Let the Scripture reference tune the prayer. Notice one word or scene that changes how you speak to God.

Catechism to consult

The Catechism reference helps show where this prayer sits inside Catholic life, worship, doctrine, and spiritual formation.

Try it this week

Tonight, name one grace, one failure, one person to pray for, and one grace needed tomorrow.

Deeper resources and next steps

For families, children, and conversation

With older children, use three prompts: thank you, sorry, please help. Keep the tone tender.

A short prayer

Holy Spirit, help me see this day with honesty and peace. Thank you for grace, forgive my sins, and guide tomorrow. Amen.
